Conclusion

JVC LT-42P300

The JVC LT-42P300 is the 42-inch version of JVC's update lineup of TeleDock LCD televisions. The term TeleDock refers to the built-in iPod/iPhone dock that folds out of the front of the television beneath the bezel. This allows you to access video and music content from your iPod/iPhone, and JVC have improved their interface for the feature to give users more control over their media. It's still not perfect, for example scrolling through long lists can be painful, but they've taken what was already a signature feature and improved it, which is nice.

The LT-42P300 also sports other improvements over the previous generation of Teledock HDTVs, including a full 1080p resolution. We were also pleased to see an improved peak brightness, better color temperature and a wider viewing angle. There are still drawbacks, however, as the color accuracy could be better and the black level was unimpressive. We were also unhappy with the motion handling, as we saw some significant blurring and artifacts. From a performance standpoint the LT-42P300 is not an impressive HDTV and at a recommended retail price of $1150 it's probably overpriced. Thankfully you can find it for significantly less if you shop around, and the TeleDock functionality is certainly a nice signature feature. If that's not important to you we recommend looking at some alternatives as you can get significantly better picture quality for the same price.

Comparisons

JVC LT-32P679
Part of JVC's previous lineup of televisions with an integrated iPod dock the we have to lean towards the LT-42P300 in this matchup because of improved picture quality and a better interface for the iPod/iPhone dock.
Vizio SV470XVT
One of our top performing HDTVs the SV470XVT offers a great balance of cost and performance. There's no doubt you're going to get better picture quality from the Vizio and bigger screen (47 inches vs. 42 inches). You will end up paying more, but perhaps not as much as you might imagine.
Panasonic TC-37LZ85
Pansonic's 37-inch LCD does not have a compelling argument against the JVC LT-42P300. It performs better in a couple of places, for example with a better total contrast ratio, but the LT-42P300 also beats it out here and there. At a smaller size and without the benefits of the iPod/iPhone dock or a significant difference in price this one is a draw.
