Conclusion

Samsung UN46B8500

Editorial Note: This is a review of the Samsung UN46B8500. Test results are for this model, but should indicate the general performance of other sizes in the UNxxB8500 series. The UNxxB8500 series includes the following models: UN46B8500 and UN55B8500.  Read here for more details on series differences. The Samsung UN46B8500 is an excellent performer, no doubt. In that regard, it at least partly justifies the huge cost. We loved the color performance, contrast ratio, deep black levels – even the audio performance. Even factoring in these testing results, $3599 (MSRP) is a king's ransom for most consumers. And considering the equally high-performing Sony KDL-52XBR9, what's driving up that cost?

Part of that cost is the design. The UN48B8500 is slick, thin, and sexy as hell. It's only 1.6 inches thick, and isn't marred by the tragic, bloodstained look of other Samsungs with a 'Touch of Color.' (Actually, it does have Touch of Color, but the spot color is translucent grey, so it actually looks elegant.) The Sony 52XBR9 may have great technology, but it looks boxy by comparison.

Another factor in the cost is the multimedia capability. There are two USB ports, one of which can pull movies, TV shows, music, and pictures straight from a hard drive. It also supports DLNA, so you really can have the home theater of your dreams (provided you're prepared to spend a little more for some accoutrements).

But let's be clear about some things that you won't be getting for that $3599. First, the UNxxB8500 series is not 'edge lit' LED, currently all the rage in tech blogs. It's the Samsung UNxxB8000 series that has edge lit-LED. This TV is backlit-LED, which means it can't get as thin as edge lit-LEDs, but it does allow for local dimming. And the local dimming is actually pretty impressive, under the right circumstances.

You're also not paying for internet features. Well... let's clarify. You are paying for internet features because they are included on the UN46B8500. But you won't actually use them because they are TERRIBLE. The interface is so painfully slow and crippled there's absolutely no reason we could see you using this unless your computer has been stolen or is currently on fire.

Overall, the Samsung UN46B8500 is a great TV, but know what you're getting for your dollars first.
