Calibration Summary

Editorial Note: This is a review of the Sharp LC-46SB57UN. Test results are for this model, but should indicate the general performance of other sizes in the SB57UN series. The SB57UN series also includes the LC-52SB57UN.  Read here for more details on series differences.

• Used Standard mode.
• Calibration done using DisplayMate Software.

Calibration

Televisions will rarely come perfectly set up for your viewing environment. To make sure all the TVs we test are being scored based on their peak performance, we first calibrate the TV. To do this, we use a CS-200 ChromaMeter to take measurements, and use DisplayMate, which is calibration software.

Below is a chart detailing exactly what changes we made. If it isn't listed below, we didn't change it. These settings should be good enough for most people, but if you really want a finely-calibrated TV, you'll need to pay a professional to customize your TV to suit your own unique viewing environment.

Setting Default Calibrated
Picture Mode Standard
OPC On: Display Off
Backlight 5 16
Contrast 30 26
Brightness 0 -13
Sharpness 2 0
Color Temp. Middle Low
Fine Motion Enhanced On Off
Active Contrast On Off
Digital Noise Reduction Middle Off
Power Saving Standard Off

Video Modes

There are a few video modes on the TV, but you can't change them on the TV itself. We found this pretty unintuitive. Typically you can change the video mode through the picture menu. The LC-46SB57UN thinks this is nonsense, however, and requires you to press a button on the remote. Also, the Sharp's manual has some humorously vague descriptions for what each setting does.

Mode What it Does
Standard For a highly defined image in a normal lighting.
Movie For a movie.
Game Lowers image brightness for easier viewing.
PC For PC.
User Allows the user to customize settings as desired. You can set the mode for each input source.
Dynamic (fixed) Changes the image and sound settings to the factory preset values. No adjustments are allowed.
Dynamic For a clear-cut image emphasizing high contrast, useful for sports viewing.
Other Models in the SB57UN Series
This is a review of the Sharp LC-46SB57UN. The other sizes of HDTVs in this series should be similar in terms of performance and usability. For details about any differences, click on the image to jump to the Series Comparison page.
