Conclusion

Sony Bravia KDL-46Z5100

The Sony KDL-46Z5100 is one of Sony's newer Bravia LCD HDTVs, with a ton of media features and a PlayStation 3-like menu system. The TV did well on most of our testing, but fell down in a few areas. The area it had the worst performance in was greyscale gamme. Colors and greys drop off far too quickly, leading to a loss of detail in dark areas. The colors also peak slightly before they should, although this is a relatively minor flaw. The contrast ratio was incredible.

The TV handled motion very well when Motion Flow was enabled, although we'd recommend turning it off when watching 24fps content. The speakers were definitely better than average. The TV did have a shallow viewing angle and uniformity issues that occur away from dead-center, but these were relatively minor. Although the auxiliary media features were very basic, their inclusion was still welcome.

Although the TV is expensive, it's a solid option in the 46-inch class.

If you're not as keen on the extra features and want a bigger size, the Sony Bravia KDL-52V5100 is a good option. If you want better color performance, the Vizio SV470XVT. The Samsung LN40B650 performed about as well as the
KDL-52V5100, but is significantly less expensive at about $1,300.
