Conclusion

Sony Bravia KDL-40W5100

Editorial Note: This is a review of the Sony KDL-40W5100. Test results are for this model, but should indicate the general performance of other models in the W5100 series, which include the KDL-46W5100 (46'), the KDL-52W5100 (52'), and the KDL-65W5100 (65'). Read here for more details on series differences. The Sony KDL-40W5100 is expensive for its size, but its price is somewhat justified by its performance and feature set.

First of all, the TV had an impressive black level and contrast ratio. It did well on most of our color accuracy tests, but the color gamut it displays is off. Further downsides include issues with artifacting and a narrow viewing angle.

The online connectivity also offers significant value. Most TVs toss a LAN port onto the back and try as hard as they can to market the two available widgets as the next best thing. Sony is actually using their connectivity to offer an astounding array of streaming video options.

The KDL-40W5100 offers both quality and quirks. At $1500 for a 40-inch set, it's also not an impulse buy by any means. We think, for the vasty majority of users, however, the pros far outweigh the cons.
