Sony unveils 9.9mm-thin LCD

Not wanting to compete with Panasonic on the grounds of 'TV so big it has a noticeable gravitational pull,' Sony instead showed off their absurdly thin TV at IFA. This TV, the Sony KDL-40ZX1, is 9.9mm at its thinnest point, although there's a box part of the way down its design that's considerably wider. The TV attains its thinness by placing its LEDs in the corners of the LCD rather than behind it. Through some sort of optics witchcraft, the light is evenly distributed throughout the entire display. The TV is set for launch in 2010 for $4,500.

If you want to see the thinness in action, check out an on-location video of the screen over at Gizmodo.
