Introduction

Imagine a TV with no wires. You're talking about WiFi, right? No, we mean no wires, at all. Haier, the Chinese company better known as an appliance manufacturer, is showcasing a new technology here at CES that conducts electricity wireless to the TV, as well as streaming content. The TV is pretty far from production at this point, but it's among the more amazing things we've seen at the show. Here's an in-depth look at the technology and how it might be implemented in future products.

Tour

The model on the CES show floor is actually built from the chassis of a 2009 Haier 32-inch CCFL LCD television (the HL32K1). As you can see from the photos below, this is a chunky little TV, but from conversations with company reps, it appears that they just wanted adequate room in which to house a whole bundle of experiment technology.

Haier stated that the 'capture coil' inside the television is only 1cm thick. Presumably, if the coil doesn't cause interference with other components in the casing, the technology could fit in a much thinner TV. The size of the coil isn't necessarily fixed, though. It would require different sizes for different applications. While the coil is just 1cm thick, it's 12x12 inches wide, which was the size required for this very specific 32-inch LCD television.

Look, ma, no wires!
