August 28, 2008Toshiba demos video camera-based control scheme
Like many companies nowadays, Toshiba is experimenting with nontraditional control interfaces. Their new webcam-esque feature lets you hold up your fist and move it around to manipulate a cursor on the screen. Using your fist cursor, you can navigate the TV's menus. Other controls include holding out your palm in the traditional 'Stop!' gesture to quit out of the input method, waving your hands around spastically to rotate 3D on-screen objects, or holding up cue cards which cause the TV to perform certain actions. Our source for this wonderful information, Engadget, played around with this feature personally, and said the system was, 'a little shaky for now.' Hopefully soon we'll have Minority Report-esque controls up and running. Of course, the downside to such innovations is they drastically limit a sci-fi writer's options for implausibly futuristic technology.[Via Engadget, picture via Engadget]

Samsung UN32D5500 LED LCD HDTV Review
The D5500 has a rather high MSRP of $699, considering it’s only a 32-inch TV. There are some “premiums upgrades,” a term we use with some dubiousness, knowing that these features can be far less valuable than they appear. Nevertheless, at its core this is a good television.
