Viewing Effects Summary

Editorial Note: This is a review of the Vizio SV470XVT1A. Test results are for this model, but should indicate the general performance of other sizes in the SVxx0XVT1A series. The SVxx0XVT1A series includes the following models: SV420XVT1A and SV470XVT1A.  Read here for more details on series differences.

• Poor viewing angle
• Extremely low-reflective screen
• Testing done using DisplayMate Software

Viewing Angle (3.42)

The viewing angle of most LCD televisions is pretty poor compared to plasma (or, of course, the glass tube TVs you grew up with). Compared to similar LCD televisions, however, the Vizio SV470XVT1A did not fair terribly. The TV lost more than 50% of its contrast at 25.61 degrees from center (in either direction).

Reflectance (9.0)

The Vizio SV470XVT1A benefits from having an exceptionally low-reflection screen. When the screen is all or mostly white, and a light is pointed directly at you, the viewer, you can't see a thing. Even when the screen is black, it's hard to see yourself. That's great, because too many TVs practically double as mirrors. When the screen is all black and a light is pointed directly at the TV, you will see a glare, but that's all but impossible to avoid. Overall, this a great performance.

Video Processing (2.0)

The video processing options on the Vizio SV470XVT1A are many, but the usefulness is limited. A lot of these effects do more harm than good, we're sorry to say. Particularly offensive is the smooth motion, which produced an unnatural look to movies and TV when the featured is turned up too high.

Setting Claimed Function Our Impression
Noise Reduction Reduce Background Picture Noise when present The picture frequently appears noisy, perhaps due to sub-par processing. The noise reduction feature does not seem to have much of an effect on MPEG noise.
Color Enhancement Select Alternate Color Performance Capabilities; choose Normal, Rich Color, Green/Flesh, Green/Blue, and Off. Very subtle changes, not much effect
Advanced Adaptive Luma Improve Details in Dark Areas of the Picture; choose Low, Medium, Strong, and Extend Appears to compress the blacks too heavily if you use this feature
Enhanced Contrast Ratio Increase the Range of Black-to-White As described, it bumps up the contrast
Smooth Motion Effect Smooths the motion; low, middle, and high settings Gives the picture that heavily processed look, also produces a lot of artifacting
Real Cinema Mode The type of motion smoothing; choose precision of smooth Both settings look bad. Don't bother.
Other Models in the SVxx0XVT1A Series
This is a review of the Vizio SV470XVT1A. The other sizes of HDTVs in this series should be similar in terms of performance and usability. For details about any differences, click on the image to jump to the Series Comparison page.
