Just before CES 2009 is ready to kick off JVC has decided to take the wraps off a prototype that it's calling the lightest 32-inch LCD HDTV ever. They've achieved the feat by moving a lot of the components off of the TV itself to a separate box. In what looks like a trend leading up to CES this year JVC is also pushing the green angle here with 50% fewer materials going into the HDTV.

LG HDTVs to stream Netflix
|
Added on 2009-01-05 11:30:00
by Alfredo Padilla
|
Netflix has been remarkably aggressive about getting their streaming content into your living room via set top boxes like the Roku or Xbox 360, but it looks like you won't even need those to get your Netflix fix if you purchase a new LG HDTV. LG is announcing that they will be releasing a lineup of Plasma and LCD televisions at CES this week that will come with built-in support for streaming Netflix content. As you would expect HD Netflix content is also supported and you'll be able to control video playback with your TV's remote. We're sure this is just the next step in what has been an accelerating move towards getting streaming internet video on your HDTV. Macworld is happening this week too so we'll see if Apple has any updates to their Apple TV to compete with Netflix's burgeoning selection of straight to the television streaming options.

We were quite impressed with the 47-inch XVT when we looked at it in our review, and for those who were waiting for a larger screen you can now get 55-inch hotness with the XVT's goodies like 120Hz Smooth Motion, 50,000:1 contrast ratio and five HDMI ports. The XVT series is a great value, as we mentioned in our review of the SV470XVT.

Apple TV update does nothing, or just about...

Apple has released an update for their less than impressive set top box (the Apple TV if you don't know). The update adds several long awaited features (note: sarcasm implied), including the ability to have universal remotes and viewing of iTunes playlists in the Apple TV interface. We should note, however, that if you have attempted to actually make the Apple TV useful by installing a third party interface like Boxee this update will cause Boxee to stop working. We'll let you make your own call on whether iTunes playlists are worth it.

Silicon Mountain's got some slick new HDTVs for those who love all-in-ones. The Allio HDTVs are currently available in 32-inch and 42-inch sizes and pack a 1080p HDTV and a full computer with Blu-Ray drive and hard drives up to 1TB running Windows Vista Home Premium, which comes with all the media center goodies you might want. We have to admit, as hard core geeks these things make us salivate a bit. And why invest in the ultimate home theatre/pc setup when you can make one low payment of between $1600 - $2800 to get it all at once?

How Televisioninfo.com Is Watching The Election
|

|
We decided to watch the election coverage in style here at the Televisioninfo.com offices: on 4 TVs at once.

From the left we have the 32-inch, JVC LT-32P679, a rather old and cranky Hitachi projection TV, the Vizio V047L and the Samsung LN32A450, which we are currently reviewing. the first three are being driven off a Comacst HD cable connection, while the Samsung is connected to a Laptop over a VGA connection. For those tedious moments imbetween results and concession speeches, the Vizio is also connected to an XBox 360.

Netflix aims to take over the world

Netflix has had a busy week. First up was an announcement that they would be bringing their streaming video service to Macs, with the service now in closed Beta but expected to be available generally by the end of the year. Netflix will be using Microsoft's Flash competitor Silverlight to allow Mac users to stream Movies and TV shows from their website. You will need to be a Netflix subscriber to use the service, of course. [via: Boy Genius Report]
Netflix also announced that they would be bringing their streaming video service to Tivo set top boxes as well. Tivo has previously had partnerships with Amazon's Unboxed service to provide downloadable Movies and TV shows, the streaming Netflix service now gives Tivo users even more options to get onlline content onto their HDTVs. [via: Engadget HD]
Last up is word that Netflix will begin streaming HD video to Xbox 360s, which had previously already supported standard definition streaming. I'm sure that Tivo and Mac users hope that HD streams come to their devices soon as well. [via: Gizmodo]

Color of your TV = Color of dreams

An interesting study indicates that your dreams are influenced by the TV you watch. Respondents to the survey who grew up watching black and white TV were over five times more likely to dream in black and white than those who grew up in the color era. Chock up another point for those who think we watch too much TV.

Target agrees to pay licensing fees to MPEG-LA
|
Added on 2008-10-21 12:12:00
by Alfredo Padilla
|
The ongoing effort by the MPEG-LA consortium to get HDTV suppliers to pay licensing fees for their Mpeg-2 patents. The issue here is whether companies that rebrand HDTVs, DVD players and other equipment that uses Mpeg-2 need to pay licensing fees even if the original manufacturer has already paid the licensing fee. Target's move to reach an agreement with the MPEG-LA consortium is another victory for that group, while others like Vizio still hold out.

Netflix streams TV from CBS and Disney
|
Added on 2008-09-24 03:07:00
by Alfredo Padilla
In the latest sign that the place you'll be getting your content for your HDTV is probably going to change significantly over the next decade or so Netflix has announced that they have signed deals with CBS and Disney to distribute their content. The TV shows will be available 24 hours after the show airs for any Netflix subscriber that qualifies for their free streaming video service. Your can get Netflix onto your HDTV using Roku or an Xbox 360. The quality still isn't up to par, in fact it's quite poor right now, but you can bet that this sort of content delivery system is the future.

Mitsubishi's LaserVue gets a price

The 65-inch Mitsubishi's LaserVue got a price today: $7,000. The TV is a 1080p and, true to its name, uses lasers to display its vibrantly-colored images. It will ship later on this month (September), so chances are the pricing info on the 73-inch version will be released sometime soon. We're just looking forward to the day when we get to use the headline: "TV hacked to create doomsday laser."

Tivo ships 1TB HD XL DVR
|
Added on 2008-09-04 21:36:00
by Mark Brezinski
TiVo started shipping out their HD XL DVRs today. This extremely capacitive model costs $600 and has a full Terabyte (TB) of storage space. Unless our abacus is broken, this is significantly more expensive than a 1 TB hard drive.
There are more and more TVs lately that have built-in DVR, so we're guessing the absurd expanse of storage is to differentiate TiVo from the riffraff. With that kind of storage space, you can have a pretty expansive list of movies without the laborious task of changing DVDs. If you're super lazy, or want every season of a show on file, then the HD XL was made for you (probably only for you).

Sony Bravia to get 240Hz frame rate
|
Added on 2008-09-03 20:37:00
by Mark Brezinski
One of the TVs Sony announced at CEDIA is the Bravia KDL-52XBR7 LCD TV. Why is it special enough to merit a blog post? It features a 240Hz frame rate, as compared to the standard 60 frames per second. In an effort to explain the delicate process through which such a high frame rate is possible, Sony has trademarked the term Motionflow. While they don't really explain what Motionflow is or how it works, they do assure you it quadruples the conventional LCD frame rate (in case you forgot that 240 fps / 60 fps = 4). They also mention something about "interpolating three new frames." They do not, however, mention whether or not our poorly-designed human eyeballs will be able to appreciate the increase over the current higher-end frame rate, 120Hz.

Panasonic sets pricing on PZ850 series
|
Added on 2008-09-03 19:57:00
by Mark Brezinski
Panasonic's internet-capable, high-definition plasmas will be welcoming in two larger siblings later this month: the 58-inch class, and the TH-65PZ850 class, which is 64.7 inches. These TVs will have all the same feature as their smaller counterparts, which include a native resolution contrast ratio of 30,000:1, a dynamic ratio of 1,000,000:1, color re-mastering, 24p native reproduction, game mode, and an SD memory Card slot, 4 HDMI slots, and a PC port, among other things. Of course, they all use IPTV to connect to the internet as well.
The 64.7-inch TV, the TH-65PZ850, will cost a steep $7,000, while the 58-inch model will cost a mere $4,000. Panasonic would like to remind you that although these prices may seem high, the internet is priceless.

Sharp announces two limited-edition HDTVs
|
Added on 2008-09-03 19:30:00
by Mark Brezinski
Sharp has announced two limited-edition LCD HDTVs: the 52-inch LC-52XS1U-S and the 65-inch LC-65XS1U-S. Both units have shiny new 10-bit Advanced Super View (ASV) LCD panels, which will be capable of 1080p. Other similarities between the TVs include AQUOS Net functionality, a back-lit RGB-LED system, and a dynamic contrast ratio that's greater than 1,000,000:1. Like Samsung's new, emaciated LCD, both TVs feature a thickness equal to one inch. Unlike the Samsung unit, however, the Sharps are 1-inch at their thinnest part, meaning 90% of them is sure to be a great deal thicker than that. Both sets will be released in October for an as-yet-unreleased cost to you, the consumer.

Toshiba announces Fall lineup
|
Added on 2008-09-03 18:54:00
by Mark Brezinski
Toshiba has announced their Fall LCD TV lineup, all of which feature fancy upconverting. Each TV makes use of Toshiba's newest acronym, SRT, or Super Resolution Technology. This will upgrade standard definition to 1080p, meaning your regular TV and non-HD DVDs will look significantly fancier. There were 11 new TVs announced in total, which are categorized into four different product series.
The best and brightest series, the Regza Cinema Series XV545 LCDs, will come in 42-inch, 46-inch and 52-inch sizes. The screens will have a refresh rate of 120Hz, which is twice as fast as the current standard. Other neat features include a gaming mode for faster inputs, an AutoView feature that adjusts the picture based on the TV's surroundings, and a dual-layered cabinet to make your TV look like it's an alien with translucent skin.
A notch down from the XV545s, the RV535s are similar, but don't have the 120Hz refresh rate. The RV525 series just has plain old 1080p without any of the bells/whistles of the fancier models, and is only available with 40-inch or 46-inch screens. The AV502 Series is at the bottom of the barrel, with only 720p HD and the smallest set of screen sizes: 26-inch, 31.5-inch and 37-inch.
For more information, most of which is explained by a virtual PR woman named Allison, you can head over to Regza's official site.

New LG plasmas to have 160GB of storage
|
Added on 2008-09-01 18:59:00
by Mark Brezinski
LGs PG6900 plasma TVs are set to have built-in hard drives with 160GB of memory. This amount of storage combined with the series' 8-day electronic program guide should ensure you never miss an episode of The Secret Life of the American Teenager. Other wonderful features include three HDMI ports, a 30,000:1 contrast ratio, and a 100Hz refresh rate. Expect these TVs soonish, at about $1800 and up.
As an aside, most high-end media players are capable of storing 320GB of data or more. Considering DVR is a burgeoning trend and Gigabytes can be crammed by the hundreds into tiny iPods, is there any particular reason we aren't seeing more TVs with big hard drives?

Samsung's TV Makes Sony's feel fat
|
Added on 2008-08-29 16:45:00
by Mark Brezinski
Samsung, the masters of irony that they are, have given their crazy-thin LCD the longest possible name: the Samsung Ultraslim LCD TV All-In-One 1. This TV is 1-inch thick at its widest point. Although the Sony KDL-40ZX1 is 9.9mm thin at some places, it has a thick box towards its bottom, making Samsung's TV thinner overall.
Samsung seems to have taken a cue from Apple's iPhone aesthetic, as the back of the TV features a curved taper, and comes in either black or white coloration. The result: a very pretty TV. We think the Samsung Ultraslim LCD TV All-In-One 1 will create an unfair standard of beauty in the television industry, which will most likely lead to many other TVs developing body image issues.

Toshiba revamps XV line, announces RV line
|
Added on 2008-08-28 21:05:00
by Mark Brezinski
Toshiba's entry-level HD LCDs, the XV line, will be adding a few new sizes. Also, the entire series will be getting a fresh coat of paint. The two new sizes are 46 inches and 52 inches, and the series will transition to a glossy black facade to match the rest of the Regza TVs.
A new line, the RV series, was also tacked on to the announcement. The RV line will also be 1080p, and will feature Active Vision M100 HD at 120Hz. While we know three sizes (37, 42, and 46 inches) will be released this October in Europe, we have no idea what the pricing or availability in the states will be.

Sony unveils 9.9mm-thin LCD
|
Added on 2008-08-28 16:15:00
by Mark Brezinski

Not wanting to compete with Panasonic on the grounds of "TV so big it has a noticeable gravitational pull," Sony instead showed off their absurdly thin TV at IFA. This TV, the Sony KDL-40ZX1, is 9.9mm at its thinnest point, although there's a box part of the way down its design that's considerably wider. The TV attains its thinness by placing its LEDs in the corners of the LCD rather than behind it. Through some sort of optics witchcraft, the light is evenly distributed throughout the entire display. The TV is set for launch in 2010 for $4,500.
If you want to see the thinness in action, check out an on-location video of the screen over at Gizmodo.

Panasonic unveils disconcertingly large plasma
|
Added on 2008-08-28 14:47:00
by Mark Brezinski
Panasonic unveiled a fairly imposing 150-inch plasma TV at IFA. It seems TVs are growing out of control lately, to the extent where we simply wouldn't want one of these in our house for fear of death by crushing. Besides being capable of fatally injuring those around it, this TV has a 2,160 X 4,096-pixel Advanced HD display, which is four times 1080p. We're guessing it will use its superior resolution to entrance its victims prior to the crushing. What's worse, this death trap is set to be mass-produced in May 2009.

Toshiba demos video camera-based control scheme
|
Added on 2008-08-28 09:15:00
by Mark Brezinski
Like many companies nowadays, Toshiba is experimenting with nontraditional control interfaces. Their new webcam-esque feature lets you hold up your fist and move it around to manipulate a cursor on the screen. Using your fist cursor, you can navigate the TV's menus. Other controls include holding out your palm in the traditional "Stop!" gesture to quit out of the input method, waving your hands around spastically to rotate 3D on-screen objects, or holding up cue cards which cause the TV to perform certain actions. Our source for this wonderful information, Engadget, played around with this feature personally, and said the system was, "a little shaky for now." Hopefully soon we'll have Minority Report-esque controls up and running. Of course, the downside to such innovations is they drastically limit a sci-fi writer's options for implausibly futuristic technology.

Sylvania, Symphonic, Emerson, Philips TVs to get Blue-ray
|
Added on 2008-08-13 21:22:00
by Mark Brezinski
Funai, whose owns such famous brands as Sylvania, Symphonic, Emerson, and Philips (or at least Philips's TV branding in the US), will soon be offering LCD HDTVs with built-in Blue-ray players next summer. Funai has seen a lot of success in the past by integrating TVs with VCRs and DVD players, so this move seems like a logical next step. Though it's a bit early to gauge prices because the launch is about a year away, they'll probably fall within the $1100 to $1300 rage.
